Why the third active changes between day and night

Both formulas share acetaminophen (pain & fever) and dextromethorphan (cough). The third active is chosen by time of day: phenylephrine in Active is a decongestant — clears your nose without making you sleepy, so you can stay productive. Doxylamine succinate in Night is an antihistamine — it dries up runny nose and sneezing, and its sedating effect helps you fall asleep. That's the entire reason for the day/night split.

How to take it.

Always read the Drug Facts panel on the package before use. Adults and children 12 years and over.

Pick by time of day
Use Active during the day for non-drowsy relief. Use Night before bed when you need to rest. Don't take Night during the day — the doxylamine will make you sleepy.

Take with water
Swallow soft gels whole with water. Do not crush, chew, or break the capsules. Can be taken with or without food.

Follow the label dose
Refer to the dosing instructions on each carton. Do not exceed the maximum daily dose. Do not take Active and Night in the same dose.

Stop after 7 days
Do not use for more than 7 days unless directed by a doctor. If symptoms persist or worsen, see a healthcare professional.

Before you take it.

  • Liver warning. Contains acetaminophen. Severe liver damage may occur if more than the maximum daily amount is taken, with other drugs containing acetaminophen, or with 3+ alcoholic drinks per day.
  • Do not use with any other product containing acetaminophen, dextromethorphan, phenylephrine, or doxylamine without consulting a doctor or pharmacist.
  • Do not use if currently taking a prescription MAOI (for depression, psychiatric, or emotional conditions, or Parkinson's disease) or for two weeks after stopping.
  • Night only: may cause drowsiness — do not drive or operate machinery after taking. Avoid alcoholic drinks. May cause excitability in children.
  • Ask a doctor before use if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, thyroid disease, diabetes, glaucoma, liver disease, or trouble urinating due to an enlarged prostate.
  • If pregnant or breastfeeding, ask a health professional before use.
  • Children under 12 — ask a doctor.
  • Keep out of reach of children. In case of overdose, contact a Poison Control Center right away (1-800-222-1222).
